Today's Shootings

As some of you know, I teach at Virginia Tech. I was on my way to class today when I almost walked into a cordon of police cars blocking off access to much of the upper campus. I went back to my office, where my colleagues and I tried to glean information from news bulletins, e-mails from the University Relations office, and streaming video. The police let us out at noon, and I went home.

A quick thank you to everyone who has checked in. I'm fine, and am currently trying to account for all my students.

  • I'm glad you're safe.

This is Ian MacFarlane, by the way. I forgot to mention that in my last comment.

  • My goodness. I am so new to you that I didn't even know how connected you were with the shootings. I am relieved to hear you're safe and do pray that all your students are as well. I only saw the news in passing so I really don't know much about what happened. Blogging does make the world so much more smaller, and widens our perspectives so much.

  • Ian-
I'm glad to know it's you! Yeah, everything's okay here. About half of my kids have checked in.

    Claudia-
Yeah--I was just reading a CNN feed. One of the kids it quoted was on the way to my class when the police coralled him and sent him home. We're all a little shaken up.

    Odat-
Thank you so much for checking in!

    Danielle-
    Thanks for your prayers!

  • Fuck me! What horrific news - you must be so shocked but thank God you are safe. Extraordinary in light of our recent discussion about firearms.

  • Mist-
Me, too. Thanks for the warm thoughts.

    Jude-
I'm fine. I've located most of my students, and they seem to be traumatized, but okay.

    Scott-
    Crowding in action, huh?

I'm seriously rethinking the second amendment, particularly in light of Bush's response to this disaster.

    Fred-
    Thanks. I'm fine.

    Puss-
I'm still trying to deal with the enormity of this. Guns are pretty scary to me right now.

  • I am so very glad that you are OK, and that your students seem to be too. Thank God. Such a hideous thing. My heart and my prayers go out to those who lost a loved one or friend, and to all of the other students, family and staff of Virginia Tech. You haven't met me yet, but here's a hug anyway from St. Louis: ((((you))))

  • When I found out where the shootings occured, my very first thought was of you and your students. I am heartbroken that events like this have to happen, but that it was at a sanctuary of learn makes it that much worse. As Jen said, "I wish there was something I could do to help."

    My thoughts are with you!

By Anonymous Anonymous, At April 17, 2007 at 6:13 PM

  • Thinking about all of you. Hope you can see V & G soon.

  • Monicker and Will-
I heard from my last student this evening. He went home and missed all the e-mails.

    Neil-
    Thank you so much.

    CEO-
Thrilled is an odd word, but I feel the same way. I'm so glad that none of my students were among the victims.

    Omar-
It's great to hear from you. I appreciate the warm thoughts, even if the phone lines aren't cooperating.

    Lee-
    Thank you so much.

    Stacey-
I've heard so much about you. Thank you for checking in, and for the warm hug.

    Jali-
The vibes mean a lot. Thanks!

    Joey-
I'm right there with you and Jinja. I'm confronting my own impotence on this matter. There just isn't anything for me to do, really.

    Clover-
I'm leaving tomorrow. Thanks for the thoughts!

    Let's Pretend and Lex-
Thank you both so much. The prayers mean a lot.
